Alexandre Yersin, the French medical pioneer, is well remembered in Vietnam, where he was affectionately called “Ông Năm“. Surprisingly and as a sign of the deep respect the Vietnamese have for him, following the country’s independence, streets named in his honour kept their designation, and his tomb in Suoi Dau was graced by a pagoda where rites are performed. His house in Nha Trang is now the Yersin Museum.

At the museum visitors can get an idea of the work of Yersin. He founded Dalat, discovered a vital plague-causing bacterium, and researched agricultural methods and meteorological forecasting, all to the great benefit of the Vietnamese. Yersin arrived in Nha Trang in 1891 and dedicated the rest of his life to scientific discovery from his laboratory here, until his passing away in 1943. He founded the institute in 1895. On display are his desk, a rich library and his scientific instruments.

Nha Trang Cathedral (locally known as the stone church or Nui Church) is the largest church in the city. Set atop a hill that overlooks Nha Trang Train Station, it was constructed in provincial French Gothic style by Priest Louis Vallet during the early 19th century. Nha Trang Cathedrall serves the local Catholic community, with Mass being held between 05:00 and 18:30 on a daily basis.

A popular spot for wedding and landscape photography, Nha Trang Cathedral is made entirely of stone and features beautiful stained glass windows, as well as a square clock tower that’s surmounted by a large crucifix. Its three cathedral bells, which were cast in France in 1789, are still in working order. There are also hints of Vietnamese influences to the structure, such as pink backlight on the tabernacle, red neon light outlining the crucifix, blue neon on the arch, and a white neon-lit halo atop St. Mary’s statue.

Outside, Cathedral of Nha Trang are decorated with numerous statues of saints as well as 4,000 tombstones mounted on the sides, which were placed after the neighbouring cemetery was levelled in 1988 to extend the city train station.

A must-visit for any first-time visitor, Nha Trang Cathedral remains one of the coastal town’s most important remnants of French architecture. From Nha Trang city, there are two paths which lead up to the cathedral. Visitors can either take a 53-step stone stairway from Thai Nguyen Street to the church entrance or another stone pathway from the city square which will lead them to the yard behind the church.

The Nha Trang Water Puppet Theatre is a vibrant live performance which showcases the daily life of farmers, traditional dances, and mythical legends of Vietnam. This folk practice dates back to the 11th century, when flooded rice fields in Red River Delta led to villagers using handmade puppets for entertainment. It was also performed for the king’s longevity ceremony.

Nha Trang Water Puppet Theatre takes place in Tran Phu Cultural House in the form of colourful wooden puppets, light shows, and traditional tunes. The stage is a waist-deep pool of water, with 400 puppets manoeuvred using long rods by skilled puppeteers hidden behind a massive screen.

It was believed that he was gifted with a sword by deities to fight against foreign invaders during the 15th century. After defeating the invaders, Kim Quy (Golden) Tortoise God appeared before Le Loi to reclaim the sword, who was crossing a lake in Hanoi. The lake is now called Ho Hoan Kiem (Lake of The Returned Sword) and is a famous attraction in Hanoi.

Po Nagar Cham temple complex was built between 8th and 11th centuries by the Cham people who once ruled the central plain of Vietnam. The Cham people, who were Hindu in origin, had their own Sanskrit-based script. They are renowned for their skills in sculpture and architecture and left behind a legacy of artifacts and temple settlements not only in Vietnam, but also Cambodia and Thailand.

In the 14th century, the Kingdom of Champa fell into the hand of the invading Viet, whose descendants are today the Vietnamese people. A small minority of Cham people, now an ethnic minority, still live in the central plain somewhere near Danang. Although most Cham people have converted to Islam, they still worship their gods at Po Nagar Cham Towers during annual religious festival of Thap Ba, which falls around the end of April and the beginning of May.

Po Nagar Cham Towers were built to honour the goddess Po Nagar- literally translated as ‘The mother of the Country’ -who is said to have taught agricultural and weaving skills to the Cham people. Later, historians have come to identify Po Nagar with the Hindu goddesses Bhagavati, the wife of Shiva, and Durga, the buffalo-demon slayer.

The towers of Po Nagar Cham are square red brick structure with protruding support frames and tapering roofs. There were once ten buildings, each dedicated to a different deity, but now only four remain. The tallest building, at 25 metres, the Po Nagar Kalan, is the most impressive. Here, Po Nagar was worshipped and, according to historical stone inscriptions, animal sacrifices were made in her honour.

To the centre of the complex, stands a tower of Cri Cambhu, goddess of fertility. The other two temples are the shrines of the Hindu gods Shiva and Ganesh respectively. Po Nagar Cham Towers are situated on the high ground of Mount Cu Lau on the bank of River Cai, a few kilometres north from the city centre.

Suoi Do Pagoda is a 50-year-old Buddhist temple in Nha Trang that was built in honour of Quan Am, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. Set atop a mountain in Suoi Hiep Commune, the structure is an interesting landmark thanks to its serene atmosphere and significant history of Buddhism in the coastal town.

It is believed that a young girl claimed to have seen the goddess while playing with her friends at a stream which runs down the mountain. Soon after, Suoi Do Pagoda was built nearby the stream, where it continues to serve the local Buddhist community to this very day. Do note that the pagoda is packed with worshippers every 15th day of the lunar month, when visitors get to enjoy a free vegetarian meal.

It takes about 200 steps to reach the pagoda with no wheelchair facilities available, so travellers with physical disabilities or health problems may find it challenging to visit the temple. Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll be greeted with plenty of trees and a natural pool as well as panoramic views of the Cai River Valley, paddy fields, banana plantations, and neighbouring hills.

Suoi Do Pagoda is accessible within a 30-minute drive from the city, though it’s best to ask locals for directions or join a tour due to its hidden locale. As any holy places around the world, it’s important to be mindful of your attire before making your way to the temple. Photography is allowed, but refrain from making too much noise as it may disrupt the monks praying in Suoi Do Pagoda.

Opening Hours: Daily 06:00 – 18:00
Address: Suoi Hiep Commune, Dien Khanh District, Nha Trang
