Grand Café is a rooftop bar on the 20th floor of the Grand Hotel, with a unique 360-degree view of the city. What makes the view really remarkable is that you are able to have both a view of the river as well as the city. You will see planes taking off on the west, boats entering the harbour in the east, the skyline of the city in the south and the meandering Saigon River in the north.

The café has a daily happy hour from 15:00 to 18:00. Their cocktails are priced at VND 180,000 (US$ 8.50) and a beer costs you VND 80,000 (US$ 4). The Grand Cafe has indoor and outdoor areas, from which you can enjoy the view while listening to a live band playing famous cover hits every night.

As this rooftop bar is located in the middle of the city centre, it is easily reached and an ideal location to have a drink before or after dinner. Alternatively, just stick around and have something from their European menu offering pizza and tapas while taking pictures of the sunset around 18:30.

3G Trois Gourmands Saigon is a French restaurant that has been impressing affluent locals and expats since its inception in 2004. Occupying a two-storey colonial villa in District 2, its minimalistic interiors and secluded location makes it an ideal venue for romantic dinners. The restaurant also has an outdoor dining section, with plenty of tables overlooking a tropical garden and swimming pool.

On the ala carte menu, you’ll find a wide range of authentic French dishes such as seared lamb fillet, lobster with butter sauce, seabass ravioli with truffle and wine sauce, and duck breast with orange sauce. 3G Trois Gourmands Saigon also offers degustation menus that cost between USD35 and USD45, each of which includes an amuse bouche, appetizers, a main dish, homemade cheese, and dessert.

If you’d like to enjoy some wine with your meals, do ask owner Gils Brault for a recommendation as he had previously worked as a sommelier before founding the restaurant. Set along Tran Ngoc Dien Street, 3G Trois Gourmands Saigon is accessible within a 20-minute drive from Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1. We also highly recommend making a reservation beforehand as the restaurant tends to get packed especially during the weekends and holidays.

Opening Hours: Daily 11:00 – 14:00 & 18:00 – 21:30

Rising in levels like a manor from a medieval fairytale, Quan An Ngon is one of the most popular restaurants in Ho Chi Minh, housed in a renovated Vietnamese mansion with a tree lined garden and staff waiting to greet guests wearing traditional silk outfits (complete with wooden shoes). Inside Quan An Ngon Restaurant, the expanse of teak, ornate Chinese inspired lattices and surrounding balcony have all the hallmarks of a classic kung-fu movie. Visitors are often delighted with the classically styled interior. If you are looking to try many casual Vietnamese dishes – spring rolls, black pepper crab, noodle soup – in a clean and friendly environment then this is an excellent option. Located opposite the Reunification Palace on Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa Street, Quan An Ngon Restaurant is centrally located in District 1.

The decor features carved elephant tusks (I don’t know if they’re real ivory or not), exotic landscape paintings and many cooking stations where chefs are busy barbequing king prawns, rolling spring rolls or blending fruit smoothies. It isn’t fine dining, but it is a lot of fun and has a charm akin to a quaint market. There’s a gentle buzz of chatter and laughter blowing through the restaurant. The menu is clearly laid out with tourists in mind as everything has English and Vietnamese descriptions and most have an accompanying picture. The fact that Quan An Ngon is popular with locals as well as tourists gives it a sense of authenticity, and although the staff are rushed and often need to be waved down, everyone speaks the requisite amount of English and they will often recommend dishes with a simple explanation. Prices are extremely reasonable with main dishes starting from 50,000 VND ($2.50 US)

All regional specialities are on offer at Quan An Ngon Restaurant meaning you can eat your way around the country in one sitting. From the south there are oc len xao due (mud snails in coconut milk), which have a soft texture and delicately flavoured, and goi cuon – commonly known as summer rolls in English – making a particularly excellent appetiser: soft, almost transparent spring rolls stuffed with shrimp, basil and spring onion. They are light and fresh, perfect after an afternoon’s traipsing around the city. From the central region of Vietnam there are Hue and Hoi An style noodles, while the northern specialities include pho bo (beef noodle soup) and banh tom ho tay (crispy pastries filled with minced shrimp).

A long-time favourite amongst Ho Chi Minh’s expat community, Camargue is a refined French restaurant within the courtyard of an old colonial-era opium factory in downtown Saigon. The two-storey establishment is set along Hai Ba Trung Street, one of the most fashionable streets in the city.

Exuding a relaxed yet sophisticated ambience, the villa-style Camargue Saigon is fitted with high ceilings with exposed beams, subdued lighting, tiled flooring, earth-toned furniture, lit candles, and a private dining room with air-conditioning. The service here is also professional with a team of attentive yet unobtrusive staff on hand – perfect for an intimate evening with loved ones.

Its extensive food menu is helmed by French-born chef, Mickael Le Calvez, presenting French delicacies with a touch of Vietnamese influence, with standout dishes such as seabass and squid served with sweet chard, roast lamb with polenta enriched with Phu Puoc pepper, chateaubriand with foie gras, and crispy pork leg marinated in a slight spice and caramelised artichoke. Catering to its loyal clientele, Camargue Saigon also changes its chef’s recommendation menu on a weekly basis to keep things interesting.

Great for enjoying the rest of the evening at the terrace upstairs, an excellent wine list is also available at Camargue Saigon, offering imported red and white options for about VND 900,000 per glass. Due to its popularity and food quality, it’s worth noting that the price range here is higher compared to most international restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City. We also highly recommend visitors to make a reservation at least 24 hours beforehand due to the popularity of this fashionable restaurant.

Opening Hours: Daily 12:00 – 24:00
Address: 74/7D Hai Ba Trung, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
Tel: +84 8 3520 4888

The Refinery Bar and Restaurant is currently one of the most popular establishments in Ho Chi Minh thanks to colonial fixtures, interesting cocktails and a bistro type menu of mostly French-style favourites. But the main reason for coming here is because it is such a pleasant space.

It looks every inch as though you could catch a glimpse of The Seine from its twinklingly lit courtyard, and inside the French bistro theme is even more pronounced with floral floor tiles, high ceilings and rows of wine and liquor displayed behind the bar. The resemblance to French design is not some contrived gimmick but a result of the opium factory that used to operate in the courtyard, and it’s also how the bar inherited its name.

The casual menu of steak frites, pasta dishes and European salads complement the laidback atmosphere here perfectly. The Refinery is open for lunch with some excellent set menus – the two course set costs $9 – and one of the most popular and affordable Sunday brunches in town, complete with a chocolate fondue fountain. There is a happy hour from 16:00 to 19:00 when all drinks are discounted by 30%. The Refinery also mix a decent range of cocktails, the mojito being a particularly well balanced mix of boozy rum with biting lime, and there is also a hefty wine list.

Somewhat confusingly, The Refinery Bar is actually in a secluded courtyard that is also called The Refinery, and the chilled out and affluent vibe here is the perfect setting for dinner followed by a few drinks. Despite the confusion with the name, it is easy to find on Hai Ba Trung Street, opposite the Park Hyatt Hotel and close to Notre Dame Cathedral.

Opening Hours: 11:00 till late
Address: 74 Hai Ba Trung, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
