A trip from Aeon Mall Hanoi to the Old Quarter takes approximately 20 minutes by car. However, you may opt for the complimentary shuttle buses that operate various routes throughout Hanoi daily. A taxi ride is also available, typically costing between VND 130,000 and VND 150,000, which provides a more comfortable experience as buses tend to become very crowded during peak hours.

The best shopping malls in Hanoi are great options for when you need to escape the afternoon heat, catch the latest Hollywood films, and shop for internationally-renowned brands. While narrow shophouses, outdoor markets, and handicrafts outlets are aplenty in downtown Hanoi, contemporary shopping malls are gaining massive popularity amongst affluent locals and tourists for offering a wide array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options under one roof.

Open daily, Hanoi’s most popular shopping malls are mostly set close to prominent attractions such as Hoan Kiem Lake and Lotte Center Hanoi Tower. If you’re looking to purchase high quality (and authentic) goods during your holiday in the capital of Vietnam, read on to discover the five best shopping malls in Hanoi.

1. Lotte Center Hanoi

Lotte Center Hanoi provides an extensive selection of about 250 fashion and lifestyle brands. This all-in-one shopping destination also features ample entertainment and dining options, making it possible to enjoy a half-day visit.

Hoi An Silk Village is a good option for those looking to shop for luxury Vietnamese textiles, handmade lanterns, high-end suits and dresses. Located two kilometres northwest of Hoi An Ancient Town, the traditional craft village also offers a tranquil getaway as it’s set within the four-star Hoi An Silk Village Resort & Spa, numerous mulberry trees, horticulture farms, and lotus ponds.

There are several ancient homes built in traditional Quang Nam architecture, where you can learn about traditional silk manufacturing process. Currently, there are about 12 local artists within the village using antique wooden looms to process and weave the silk into quality garments, handicrafts, and tapestries.

Hoi An Silk Village’s silk showroom hosts an extensive collection of silk material, tailored suits, dresses, and jackets. Due to the superior quality of its products, the price range at Hoi An Silk Village is higher than most silk shops in Hoi An but it’s well worth the extra expense.

Hoi An Silk Village also houses a museum which features traditional costumes of 54 ethnic people from all over Vietnam as well as an onsite restaurant that serves popular regional dishes such as cao lau (turmeric noodles with pork), com ga (chicken rice), and banh xeo.

A short 45-minute tour to Hoi An Silk Village is priced at VND 100,000, where you can visit all of the ancient houses, museum, and mulberry garden. Alternatively, visitors can opt for the extensive four-hour tour for VND 400,000, where they can get a more hands-on experience of harvesting mulberry leaves, feeding silkworms, and deciphering between true and synthetic silk. Available daily at 09:00 and 14:00, the tour is inclusive of pick-up and drop-off services, a welcome mulberry drink, bottled water, lunch or dinner at the Hoi An Silk Village Restaurant, and a local guide.

Sharpen your bargaining skills and head south east to Hoi An Central Market, one of Vietnam’s best, offering an unmissable shopping experience. Rich in the smell of fragrant herbs and spices and the vibrant colours of Vietnamese silk, delve deep and you are guaranteed a bargain. Prices tend to be more inflated at the stalls closest to the entrance so head right in for the best buys.

There is a vast array of foodstuff for sale including spices such as saffron and cinnamon which are superb purchases as are the exotic fresh fruit and vegetables on display. Due to its riverside location there is also a huge selection of fresh fish available.

The marketplace is renowned for its tailors who have a section of the market all to themselves. Fine silk tailoring is cheaper here than anywhere else in Hoi An with garment makers running up a dress, shirt, jacket or full suit usually within 24 hours. Souvenir and local handicraft hunters will also find plenty to browse through at the Central Market.

Resting on the banks of the Thu Bon River, bustling Hoi An Central Market is certainly worth a look for its authentic slice of Vietnamese life. The market is busy throughout the day with locals bargaining hard alongside tourists so its best to arrive first thing in the morning. The negotiating over fish usually starts around 07:00 as the fishermen drop their catch off and the market vendors and local buyers dive in to get the best fish. Be warned that it can get very messy, nevertheless it’s certainly a sight not to be missed.

Inside the market there are also plenty of live ducks and chickens tied together and ready for sale alongside row upon row of Vietnamese cooking ingredients. The smell can get quite strong as the day heats up and the market will also become a lot busier and louder as the day progresses. If you want to avoid this, then head to the east side and the large shed type building which houses the tailors and all manner of Asian silk and textiles.

Good to Know

As a tourist browsing round Hoi An Central Market you can expect plenty of stall holders pushing their wares on you quite hard, the best course of action is to simply smile and continue on your way. When you do decide to make a purchase then remember that the first price you will be told will be over inflated, you should then offer around half and then work up to a price that you are both happy with. Be prepared to walk away and you might be surprised by the fair price you are then offered.

Opening Hours: daily from 06:30 and is best visited early starting with a walk by the docks to watch the fish arrive before you enter
Location: Nguyen Hue and Tran Phu on the Thu Bon River
Remarks: It’s a good idea to wear closed shoes as the floor in the market can get damp and sticky, especially if you are visiting the fish section.

Hang Da Market, located in the heart of Hanoi’s central business district, is a three-storey shopping mall that houses an electic array of stalls. Smaller than Dong Xuan and offering a more select product range, this is the place to come for imported wine, flowers, second-hand clothes and fabrics.

The outside of the building is also very picturesque with its white multi-perforated façade and it’s expected that the whole interior may one day change from market stalls to boutique outlets. Hang Da Market is a great place to pick up one-off clothing items including skirts, dresses and coats and some of the best buys are stylish second-hand clothes which are pretty much all in perfect condition.

The market is best visited first thing in the morning when the traders are unpacking for the day and best avoided over weekends or during the midday heat. Take a break when you shop on the first floor where you can buy some freshly cooked Vietnamese snacks.

Hang Da Market Highlights

Stepping in off the street you’ll discover fresh produce including plenty of fruit and vegetables and cooked meat, most of which is imported. The second and third floors are packed with a superb selection of clothes and fabrics with ceramic and pottery stalls dotted throughout. The clothes on offer surprisingly come in all sizes because the most of the clothes here are imported from across the globe including Japan, Europe, Korea and even the US; so you are pretty much guaranteed to find something you to suit. Look for clothes that are already hanging as these are usually the newest ones.

Traditional long Vietnamese dresses known as Ao Dais are a particularly good buy at Hang Da; rummage for ones with embroidery or intricate weaving made from real silk. Artistic rice paper products are also a great purchase, transformed into table lamps, notebooks, paintings and cards.

Good to Know about Hang Da Market

Bargaining is not only advised but absolutely expected when shopping at Hang Da. As a rule, start at around 50% of the starting price but do not accept any lower than 25%. Hang Da is located on 1 Pho Hang Da at the intersection with Yen Thai. There is also a large shop lined with bamboo cages which are filled with exotic birds on the north corner where Hang Da meets Hang Dieu, which is also worth a look.

The area was once the main stretch for pipe and tobacco sellers so you keep an eye out for the remaining stores dating back aeons located just north on Hand Dieu Street. Don’t forget to take a camera as Hang Da is worth a visit just to capture the elegant architecture of the market building.

Opening Hours: Daily 05:00 – 17:00
Address: 1 Hang Da Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Hang Gai Street is the best place in Hanoi to shop for high quality, fashionable silk materials, traditional Vietnamese apparel, and home furnishings. Also known as Silk Street, the entirety of this 300 metre-long street is lined with fashion boutiques and local tailor shops that have been operating for decades, where you can also order personally tailored suits and dresses that are made to measure..

Set on the edge of Hanoi’s Old Quarter near Hoan Kiem Lake, Silk Street is renowned for its quality and choice of craftsmen though two of our absolute favourites on Hang Gai Street are Khai Silk and Tan My Design as both stores offer ready-to-wear pieces – perfect if you’re too pressed for time to get a tail

Most stores in Hang Gai Street accept payment via credit cards and it pays to go to a better quality store and avoid the market street traders to guarantee the best quality silk. As with most retail outlets all over Vietnam, bargaining is also highly encouraged to get a decent price – start at 50% off the asking price and pay no more than 70%.

Aside from boutiques and tailor shops, Hang Gai Street also hosts a number of souvenir shops selling notebooks, lamps and postcards as well as prominent art galleries such as Thang Long Art Gallery and Green Palm Gallery.

Established in 1889, Dong Xuan Market is housed within a four-storey Soviet-style building on the northern edge of Hanoi Old Quarter. It’s also known as Hanoi’s largest indoor market, offering a wide range of goods such as fresh produce, souvenirs, accessories and clothing, as well as electronic and household appliances.

Similar to most markets in Southeast Asia, Dong Xuan Market has a bustling wet market section on the ground floor, where locals shop for seafood, meat, and vegetables while the back section sells an array of pets (cats, dogs, and fish) and fresh flowers from all across Vietnam. If you’re looking to shop for souvenirs, head to the upper levels, where you can find numerous stalls selling tee shirts, fabrics, school uniforms, handbags, handicrafts, all of which are sold at wholesale prices.

There’s also a massive dining area within Dong Xuan Market, with food vendors selling Vietnamese coffee and exotic local dishes for as low as VND 15,000. Highly recommended dishes include tiet canh (duck blood soup), fried frog, bun cha (marinated grilled pork served with noodles), and banh cuon (rolled cake).

Surrounding Dong Xuan Market are many more shops where you can purchase traditional Dong Ho drawings, Bat Trang ceramics, Binh Da embroideries and laces, and sand paintings. Within walking distance of Hoan Kiem Lake, Dong Xuan Market is a must-visit if you’re looking to experience the local lifestyle (you might even end up leaving with a pair of cheap sunglasses and a Vietnamese conical hat).
