Liquid Sky Bar in Ho Chi Minh City gained a lot of popularity with both Vietnamese as well as expats, and is frequently visited by both. Popular amongst local youths, Saigon Ranger Bar tends to get packed as early as 18:00 every day so make sure you head there early to grab a seat. Music-wise, the bar plays dubstep, techno and house on most nights, but punk, rock and hard-core music are often played by both resident and international bands.

On the drinks menu, you can find your usual bar offerings plus signature cocktails – beers cost about VND 50,000, spirits between VND 60,000 and VND 90,000 while mixed drinks and cocktails are priced at VND 110,000 and VND 120,000, respectively.

Besides being a live music venue in District 1, Saigon Ranger Bar also hosts a range of cultural events including exhibitions, launches, film screenings and readings. It can be a little hard to find as it’s hidden along Nguyen Sieu Street – look out for a flight of stairs which leads you up to the place.

It looks every inch as though you could catch a glimpse of The Seine from its twinklingly lit courtyard, and inside the French bistro theme is even more pronounced with floral floor tiles, high ceilings and rows of wine and liquor displayed behind the bar. The resemblance to French design is not some contrived gimmick but a result of the opium factory that used to operate in the courtyard, and it’s also how the bar inherited its name.

The casual menu of steak frites, pasta dishes and European salads complement the laidback atmosphere here perfectly. The Refinery is open for lunch with some excellent set menus – the two course set costs $9 – and one of the most popular and affordable Sunday brunches in town, complete with a chocolate fondue fountain. There is a happy hour from 16:00 to 19:00 when all drinks are discounted by 30%. The Refinery also mix a decent range of cocktails, the mojito being a particularly well balanced mix of boozy rum with biting lime, and there is also a hefty wine list.

Somewhat confusingly, The Refinery Bar is actually in a secluded courtyard that is also called The Refinery, and the chilled out and affluent vibe here is the perfect setting for dinner followed by a few drinks. Despite the confusion with the name, it is easy to find on Hai Ba Trung Street, opposite the Park Hyatt Hotel and close to Notre Dame Cathedral.

Although not technically on the rooftop, EON 51 is more than twice the height of other rooftop bars in Saigon and offers endless views off to the curving horizon – it’s a seriously impressive vista that is matched by a sophisticated décor of modern lounge seats, sofas and plenty of bar stools. The whole bar is bathed in soft lighting so guests can fully appreciate the 360 degree views of Saigon as day gives way to night and the city lights begin to twinkle.

Frequented by a formally dressed after-work crowd, camera-happy tourists and hushed couples on a romantic date, EON 51 Heli Bar manages to create enough separate areas with low-lighting and a range of seating options so the bar retains a sophisticated vibe in which to enjoy a range of signature cocktails, as well as several pages of wines, spirits and some tasty mocktails. All drinks are served with complimentary bar snacks and there are smoking and non smoking sections from which you are free to choose.

Considering the Bitexco skydeck on the 50th charges 200,000 VND just for the view, a drink at EON 51 Heli Bar is well worth the price, with cocktails costing 210,000 VND ($10) and beers from 90,000 VND. Bear in mind they also have a happy hour deal where select cocktails and wines by the glass sell for 145,000 VND between 17:00 and 20:00. A particular favourite is the Saigon Fizz, a heady sparkling wine concoction with Tanqueray gin, mint and lime juice. For something a little more masculine, try the whisky-based Le Loi, with Johnnie Walker Platinum stirred with an Angostura-soaked sugar cube, a dash of soda and garnished with flamed orange zest.

Noticeable from anywhere in Saigon, this skyscraper is more than twice the height of other buildings in the city and the bar is easy to spot as the helipad that juts out of the building is on the same floor, hence the name EON 51 Heli Bar. You will spend the rest of your stay looking up at the towering structure thinking ‘I was there!’ If you want to experience a bird’s eye view of Saigon, this is the place.
